two dog lovers but with full time jobs wondering if anyone has recommendation of suitable ages breeds that cope with owners absent.

We work from home once a week, and can't wait to give early morning and evening walks

We have secure garden and shelter for during the days we're away from home

Yes, a ceramic one would be ideal.
Sorry, but a dog with both owners working full time doesn't make for a good combination in my mind.

You'll probably get a more sensible answer later on.

Only thing I would suggest is a couple of ex racing greyhounds, provided you can take a couple of weeks holiday to settle them in first before leaving them. They would happily sleep all day, provided they can get out to go to the toilet if they need it. Two would keep each other company, and they are so laid back they will settle very quickly. Anything that needs more attention or training would be a disaster.
Have to agree with wildwood i'm afraid. I really dont think it's fair to have any dogs when both of you work full time.

And are you quite sure you'll still love those early morning and late evening walks when it's winter?
If it is the walks you are after, you should try contacting your local dog shelters, and offer your services as volunteer dog walkers.
Then you can walk the dogs all you like, but without them being locked up alone while you are away.
Lots of dog charities are desparate for help, especially as more and more dogs are being abandoned during the recession.
If you think that by getting 2 dogs for the reason they can keep each other company whilst you both are at work - that's not fair on the dogs either.

If you want pets that you can leave all day, get fish.
I wouldn't recommend ex racing greyhounds they are not suitable for leaving for long periods and having 2 doesn't always solve potential separation anxiety issues. A friend of mine had one which howled and barked terribly when my friend left the house so she got another to keep it company and ended up with two howling and barking greyhounds !! Also they are not suitable to be kennelled outside due to their coats. Why not volunteer at a rescue shelter they are often looking for people to walk the dogs.
