You could shut the birds in the bathroom or another room and don't let the cat in. I guess that the cat looking interested will be upsetting the birds and make them nervous..... (it would do if it were my three, it would be like Daniel and the lions)!
Is this of any help?

I hope you get a new home for the birds soon - try the yahoo pets group site. Like Freecycle but for pets.
poodi - do you cover the canaries up at night?

Hi boxtops like the birds in the lounge even if they scattering loads of seeds,my cat is mesmorised and is now sitting under the cage, have covered up the birds and will put them in the cold spare room when i go to bed!
when your cat gets fixated on the birds, use a water pistol on the cat...two or three goes will teach him to behave! I used it to great effect when next door's cat used to come and try and fish in our pond. We were still friends and he still visited me in house and garden but gave the pond a wide berth!!
