My 12 year old border collie has recently become very aggressive ( snarling, baring teeth and snapping) when removing its lead so much so that sometimes we cannot remove its lead. When off the lead he is fine and loves his walks chasing sticks , balls etc... Has anyone suffered similar problems or have any advice?

if this is a new thing then he needs his ears, eyes and neck area checked out. Is there any chance he has been hurt when the lead has been removed or that his collar is tight and the lead pinches?
yup that sounds like pain to me...a vet check is indicated IMO
it might have developed joint pain and therefore will be bad tempered, or it might have lost its sight which will also make it frightened and snappy. As with the other answers, I think you should take him to the vets. Our BC (at 10 years) had joint pain which was controlled by a series of injections. I hope he gets better soon.
