I'm almost embarrassed to ask this but i am often wakened through the night with a sound that can only be described as that like a baby crying.....it is infact my cat (indoor) it only happens at night and never when i'm in the room. Its fine when i shout shoooosh she stops but i'm wondering what earth she is doing!!!
Is she wanting me up out my bed perhaps because she is bored?
TIA

I just shout back yoo-hoo then once they hear that, they either "say" no more or come rushing up to find where we are. They do sometimes "speak" when they want me to know something - e.g. hey mum, I have a mouse, where would you like it?

I read an article a while back that explained that the baby sounding meow has been honed by cats over the years to ensure that we react to it - it sounds like our young.

Don't know if this helps but one of my moggies, Mo, does this baby crying sound sometimes when we are watching telly downstairs and she is sitting at the top of the stairs. My gut feeling tells me that she does it because she wants attention and she soon settles down when either me or my husband respond by playing or calling her name!
