dog leg tumour

The lump on the dog's leg turned out to be a grade 2 mast cell tumour. The lab said it had been removed with clean margins and he's having another op on Thurs to take a wider area. Once it is removed does that mean it can't spread?

Hope your dog is ok, I am sure your vet will give you some prognosis.

Sorry if this seems flippant in the circumstances, but someone on another group once referred to this as a 'Marcel Tumour'!

Like the name Marcel tumour. Sounds friendlier. Crunchie had his op today. Got a big wound so got to stay in overnight for pain relief. Vet said it went well though. Hopefully all removed. Thanks to everyone for your kind messages.

crunchie......not the best news, but in answer to your question, if it is excised completely, then there should be no local recurrence. However, if it has metastasised before the surgery, then it may occur again in distant organs....liver spleen etc.
However Grade 2 tumours are not that aggressive, so I would expect a low chance of metastatic spread.

Our 12.5 yr old Staffie has had Marcels tumours removed on two occasions. Firstly half his front foot was taken off leaving the two inner toes. 10 months later another was removed from his back/shoulder area. On this occasion a large gusset from shoulder to shoulder had to go, including his microchip. These tumours have to have minimum 3cm around the area removed to prevent spread.
Luckily both were caught in time. That was 6 yrs ago now & so far no other has reared it's ugly head, though I check daily for lumps, bumps & any changes to his skin. When he re-fleshed after about a year, he was re-chipped.
