beattie thats sad,but dont leave yourself open to ridicule..
send your friend our sympathies, beattie - a very sad way to lose a loved pet.
If it should be I grow frail and weak,
and pain should wake me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done ,
...for this last battle cant be won.

You will be sad , I understand,
dont let your grief then stay your hand,
for this day more than all the rest,
your love and friendship stand the test.

We had so many years,
what is to come will hold no fears.
you'd not want me to suffer so,
when the time comes let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me to the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you too will see,
it is a kindness you do to me,
although my tail its last has waived,
from pain and suffering I've been saved .
That's lovely jules - I know it's beattie's thread but I can't help but fill up at the thought of having to take the pets on that last journey. Beattie's friend must be devastated tonight.
"Not the least hard thing to bear when
they go from us, these quiet friends,
is that they carry away with them so
many years of our lives. Yet, if they
find warmth therein, who would
begrudge them those years that they
have so guarded?
And whatever they take,
be sure they have deserved."

--- John Galsworthy
Although time will soften the pain, you never forget them. When I lost my beloved spaniel Monty, I wrote this -

An empty lead, and an empty bed
An empty place where you laid your head
An empty space we cannot fill
An aching heart and tears that spill

Our lovely boy, our handsome lad
The daftest dog we ever had
But love and loyalty without measure
You were our joy. You were our treasure

Not nearly here for long enough
You were too good for Earthly stuff
A place in heaven guaranteed
But all we’re left is an empty lead
Not a poem, but this may help - there is an anonymous piece called Rainbow Bridge all about our pets "afterlife" - it is very moving, but it does help come to terms with the death of a loved pet, Try "petloss.com" or "rainbowbridge, com"
I hope it helps.
