I have a 14 year old Jack Russell and last night he woke on 2 seperate occasions in middle of night from a deep sleep barking and howling he then proceeded to run around the house and garden in an agitated manner, both times i myself was asleep and it scared me half to death!

He has never done this before was it just a bad dream? is it age related?

Would be grateful for your help.

It sounds like he was dreaming...If it continues, then it may well be age related but sometimes these things are one offs. We had to put one of our dogs in quarantine and for a week or so after he got out he used to howl in his dreams and wake up very distressed.
Probably a bad dream, but I did read once that young and old dogs (and maybe other mammals) get cramp just like humans. No reason why they shouldn't if you think about it.
My lady cat does this. She wakes up quickly and is disoriented, she usually runs around crying for a few minutes and then she calms down.

If it continues then see the vet - it may be that he is getting senile.

At 14 he still has a few good years ahead of him.
Sweetie - my chiwawa (can't spell that) jumps from deep sleep; usually a fly buzzing.
Maybe a fox in the area?
