hi, i know i should ask these questions of a vet really, but AB has been a surprising source of info before so i thought i'd ask here as well (vet is ringing me back later)
We run a dog training type club. One of the dogs caught kennel cough, and before she showed any symptoms we had a training session. Now we know, we have stopped training but unfortunately, 5 other dogs have come down with it.
Questions:
1) how long before infected dogs can safely come back to training?
2)if the dog has more dogs at home who then catch it off them, could the brother or sister then give it back to the original infectee?
3) we have disinfected all the equipment with virkon but how easy is it for people to transfer it on clothes etc? - when we were doing the disinfecting one of the people went back home and found their dog was coughing (so had it before he came but didn't know). Could the owner have transferred it on his clothes to the newly disinfected equipment?
4) can KC survive on equipment etc and if so how long for?
Any other helpful hints would be great, thanks

Once they have had it they often get immunity so even within a household of dogs some will not get it again. Unless the dogs are very young or very old it is not usually life threatening and can be easily treated with antibiotics, and benylin is a good soother for coughing dogs (childs dose). Although called kennel cough it can be caught anywhere dogs mix and is air borne, so can be carried home on clothes etc.
Normal hygiene precautions are usually enough.
