i was five and it was a gold fish it died after a week and my mum flushed goldy down the toilet but there was an overflow problem and when i went to use the toilet my fish was in the bowl,i screamed and screamed until i was sick and my dad went and brought me a tarantula and mummy screamed and screamed so we had to give it to my school for them to look after

Mine was a budgie called Timmy given to me on my 2nd birthday in 1964 by my aunt who bred them and still does. What's always amazed everyone is that I remember the day as clearly as a bell. My aunt was 16 at the time and I remember her wearing a miniskirt and a beehive hairdo! She's 63 now!

I didn't understand what was happening as no one had explained about birthdays or the fact I would get a present. My mother suddenly sat me on my grandparents' settee and I remember my legs swinging as i couldn't reac the floor. My aunt then came in (in said miniskirt) and knelt in front of me with a cage of about 12 birds. She then asked me which one I would like. I chose a mauve budgie which my aunt then tried to talk me out of as my mother later she wanted to keep it. I remember sticking to the fact I wanted the mauve one and my aunt then gave in. I was exactly two on that day(I can remember moving house 2 months before then!).

Timmy lasted 10 years and I sobbed for a week when he died. We've got two budgies now.

Grew up with dogs, mostly Border Collies, and one Poodle given to us by friends who were emigrating. Only ever had one cat who adopted us. Had a tortoise too, which I had for 40 years, and I still miss her. I asked for a Lassie dog when I was 12, and my parents said they were too big so bought me a Sheltie, I had my first Rough Collie (Lassie dog) around 22 years ago, and still have them today.

when i was born with had bloodhounds - humphrey and heather, a budgie that i squashed :-( but lady my golden retriever was my pet i got her when i was 5 for xmas. i share space with a psychotic cat now
