John Lewis released a Christmas ad which showed a boy taking a stocking of presents out to his dogs kennel. Viewers made complaints that this depicated animal cruelty because it was 'snowing' and the dog was outside. JL have agreed to remove this section from their ad. So, are these people who complained just people with nothing better to do or does it really encourage cruelty to animals?

Not sure it's promoting cruelty, but like i said on the other post about it, I did see it and think "aww, that poor dog"

ooppss sorry, I did look to see if there was already a post about it and didn't see one.
Do some people think everything they see on telly is real. It's a bloody advert for god's sake. I think they need to get a life.
Absolutely crazy! I'll write in asking to remove the Churchill advert where the dog parachutes into a porcupine farm. This is cruel to the dog.
It's a wolfhound for goodness' sake...a very hardy breed. If it's used to being in an outdoors kennel-then I am sure it will come to no harm. A sensible dog owner will take into consideration the needs of their individual animal.
I go on a dog related forum...and that dog belongs to one of the members.I'm sure they are surprised by all this hoohah.
yes its an ad but JL want us to get a warm feeling from the ad and not look at it and go (as i did) gosh I bet that dog would be cold. From the commercial aspect alone I think removing that part of it is a good idea.
i don't have a dog, but i did think it was cruel the family was inside having a fun warm loving Christmas and the dog was outside alone.....I know its been scripted but you never know what people at home take in, some people might leave the dog outside when they see an advert showing it, it makes it more exceptable.
I totally agree with Jan - its a fudging advert not reality, never mind the 'hardy' breed!!!!
i also thought poor dog. I know that some dogs are outside dogs, but when they took the stocking out he didn't even make a fuss of the dog either!
I find it quite scary that people are equating a TV advert with real life.
We all know that advertisements are true reflections of the real world - I ,myself, am trying to get a talking meerkat for Christmas.
simples...
Worst of all, this was a discussion item on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 this lunchtime. All the 'do gooders' saying the poor doggies will get cold etc. What do you think they've got fur for!? Best bit was the lady who phoned in to say she owned the house where the ad was shot. It was July, fake snow and the owner of the dog was in the kennel with it. How about cruelty to dog owners forced to sit in kennels? About time people worried about things that matter!!
So are you saying sddsddean (how hard is your name to get right by the way?), that dogs, left outside in kennels, in the snow in subzero temps don't feel the cold because they have fur? If oyu believe that one, then you are very muc mistaken i'm afraid.

Yes I'm fully aware the advert wasn't real, and the dog wasn't really left out there etc etc etc, but I still didn't like that bit of the ad.

Would you be as blase about it if it showed a child outside in the snow? It's only a dog right?
Well, I for one, think a dog's home should be outside. As long as they have food, water and shelter and are loved then that's ok. And of course with lots of family contact and freedom, not chained up.

If I bought a kennel home and suggested that Max lived out side, I know what the boss would say
How do we know that kennel wasn't heated?
Of course we all know that it isn't real, but it's an advert and it's supposed to reflect a real life situation. It's a bad advert, that's all! I don't think anyone keeps their dogs in a kennel outside in the snow here in England and it aint a husky and I agree with Boo,of course they would want to come inside and warm up.
Having said that,my dog likes swimming in semi-frozen ponds (but I'm sure she likes being warm at night asleep! And I'd like to bring those meerkats in as well!
Old Jetspoon would've stayed outside all year long if we'd let her. A few times she crept out and by the time we found her she had a layer of snow on her. She was as happy as Larry be it rain or shine (or snow!)
