Puppy will only poop inside!

I've got a 6 month Yorkie who has been house trained successfully as far as weeing goes but he absolutely refuses to poop outside. This morning we have been out walking since 10.30am until 7.00pm. He did lots of wees but not one poop. Then literally as we walked in through the front door he pooped! It's as if he just refuses to do his business outside and saves it for strictly indoor only.

Does anyone have any idea why this has happened and what I can do to train him to do his business outside? I've tried keeping him outside and waiting for him to go so i can give him loads of praise, but as you can see even being out for 9.5 hours doesn't work! Any ideas?!

find him a dry warm spot to poop on, or lay down newspaper outdoors for his sensitive little bum :)

I don't think he is going to connect the need to go out with doing a poop if he is constantly outside. Take him out every 15 minutes,and always take him to the same place-so he associated that spot with pooping. It may help to also take a bit of the paper he weed or pooped on indoors,and put it where you want him to do his business.

Who on earth walks a 6 month old puppy for 9 and a half hours?. He needs to sleep, go out, play, go out, eat, go out sleep some more and at 6 months no more than fifteen minutes or so walking at a time. You must watch him as soon as he wakes or has been playing for a while and then take him out and stay with him. Most pups will need to go within a few minutes of eating or waking. Give him somewhere to rest, puppy pen or caged off area so he will want to go elsewhere to do his poos.

I think when thyre going to do the toilet they sniff floor and walk in cirlces? Then u can pounce and whisk him outside wee cutie x

if you walk him for that length of time you are going to have some huge vet fees as he gets older. Take him out straight after a meal , if he does anything ,even wees, praise him .Puppies of that age will want to go when they wake up and when they have something to eat. Good luck

good advice given already here!........after food they need to poo!.....and after sleeping for a while too!.....get him outside, and when he performs, give him a treat and lots of praise and fussing!.........

Oh! and word association works well too!.........so when he does poo, say 'poo, good boy!.....HE Should then learn that when you say this, you want him to perform!....takes a little time for a dog to relate to this, but with time it will work!......

As the others have said that is an awful big walk for a puppy and such a small dog? What did you do/say to him when he went inside the house?

Walking a puppy dog that length of time, are you completely bonkers.? Follow the advice you have been given and ease up on the long walks before you do your pet some serious damage.

He doesn't yet know that he is expected to 'do his business' outside. As Lankeela says, watch for signs that he wants to go, immediately take him to the place that you want him to do it. As he performs, say 'do, wee-wee/poo (or whatever command suits you) so that he knows what word to associate with the action. When he has successfully 'gone' in the place that you have chosen, give him a big fuss, really go to town with the petting and good dog, so that he learns what is expected of him.
You will need to do this consistantly until he stops wanting to go indoors.
This is not his problem so don't punish him; it's up to you to let him know what you expect from him so if he doesn't do it it's your failure not his!
As far as the horrendous day out 'walking' take note of the above comments.
Also, a walk is for exercise not just for the dog to be toileted, too many people whisk their dog back into the car as soon as they've 'gone'.

I just looked in "It's me or the Dog" book by Victoria Stillwell and she says to take some soiled paper outside with his scent on and put the paper on the ground next to a clean piece of paper..let him sniff the soiled paper and then gently tell him to "go poo" in a soft kind voice. When he does, praise him and give him a chicken treat. Gradually decrease the size of the paper until he doesn't need it anymore, hope that helps.

I feel I need to point out something that I didnt quite make clear in my question. Although we were out of the hosue for that amount of time we definitely weren't walking for that long!!! We visited friends where he rested, ate and slept. I meant more that we'd been out of the house for that period of time, not walking constantly! I would never ever take a puppy for a walk that long as I know how much damage that could do. I don't even think I could walk for 9.5 hours, let alone my little pup! I didn't really make that clear in my initial post so just wanted to clear that up!
