The other day a female blackbird sat on our fence for nearly half an hour preening her feathers in spite of us in full view of her. had any one else experienced this?

pinki, birds like to be able to see clear space around their feeder, so they can see nothing is waiting to pounce while they are eating. You might do better putting it on a pole in a clear area, rather than on the tree.
I saw a blackbird taking a bath in the cats' water dish near the back door the other day - brave fellow!

Chas, where are you? I have lots of birds, but as has been said I feed them, and with two Jack Russels have no cats at all :) Its interesting that you say you usually get them, wonder whats wrong?
I'm in the garden today and am making a list of what I see which I'll post later on the birding thread, (too hot to do much gardening!!) as I'm not getting my usual birds, but am getting some new comers! Maybe it was the harsh winter.
Lunch now :)
