How soon is it ok to text a guy?

OK,so this guy i grew up with and we've both liked each other since we were kids,yesterday at mid nite he im me on Facebook and gave me his number,this is what he said:here's my number if u ever wanna text me k :) so we exchanged numbers,i was just wondering how soon is it ok to text him,i don't want him to think i don't care but then again i don't wanna come off as desperate and jump on it right away,so how soon should i text him??

Thanks I'll text him soon,The reason i didn't text him right after is because my mom says it makes me seem desperate like all i do is wait for him but then again my moms older and i should get out of the habit of listening to her when it comes to stuff like this cause I'm 25 going on 26 in November

Just text now and say you're checking you've got the number right. If he strikes up a conversation then carry on, if not then just say thanks and it looks like you really were just checking.

This happened to me; I got my friend's number. I then (a few hours later) texted it and said "hiya! Just checking this reaches you- here's my number so you can have it in your phone". He then texted back and the rest is history. Sending someone a text to check you have the number written down right is fine, and a good way to start the communication.

Also, just cos he was logged in doesn't mean he was about. I'm notorious for leaving myself logged on to fb and yahoo, but I'm off elsewhere hoovering or something. Some friends take offence thinking I'm ignoring them, but I've just left my computer on.
