Fly repellents.

I live in Cyprus and my next door neighbours (lovely people ) have dogs and chickens, as a result there are more flies than normal which makes sitting out in the garden uncomfortable. Does anybody know of a plant/plants that we could grow to discourage flies? Any othe tips would be appreciated, and yes, I do have a fly swat!

I have heard citronella candles are good, but haven't used them myself
