What type of collar do you prefer for your dog?

Hi everyone! I am currently making a load of dog collars and was wondering what type of dog collars do our answerbank doggy people prefer: Fixed collar, soft slip collar (martingale collar), chain martingale collar, choke collar, prong collar etc?
Could you please tell me what breed your doggie is, what kind of collar you use and what the approximate circumference of your dog's neck is? I have so far only made collars for our Irish Wolfhounds, but have now started making them for friends. I have not yet made any small dog collars and want to look into doing collars for various breeds, but have no idea of sizing. Could any of you please let me know your dog's breed and the circumference of their necks please, so I can get an idea of what sizes each breed might need? Many thanks!

Jack Russell Cross and quite slender. Has a small collar (not one for toy breeds) I will measure her neck tomorrow and let you know. She just has a normal pet doggy collar, nothing fancy, no chains, chokes or prongs (and it must be red because it suits her) I don't like too thin a collar. She is brilliant walking on a lead and doesn't pull at all so no need for anything that restrains her.

I have a Parsons Jack dog, his neck measures 13", and a JRT bitch whos neck measures 11.5". I get the collars bigger to allow for fastening obviousley.

Both have soft leather collars, nothing fancy, Freddie always has black as he's black and white, Tally always has brown as, yep you've guessed, shes brown ahnd white (well lemon to be posh). Tally walks well on the lead so no restraint needed, and Fred does not have a lead, as he just walks to heel sits when told But I do live in the middle of nowhere with no traffic. Both could do with nice new collars so if your selling them let me know x

Lottie & Chaffinch, your doggies sound lovely! Thanks for your help. Someone has asked me to make one for a Jack Russel, but she keeps forgetting to measure the dogs neck, lol. The collars I make are mainly soft-slip, so can do no harm to the dogs neck and are very comfortable. At the moment I am only making 2" and 1.5" widths, but can do smaller if need be. I use very strong military webbing, which is covered with faux suede and a trim, has either brass or steel/nickel fittings (or plastic if requested) and sometimes also has conchos. Some are Celtic design. Here is a link that shows some of them.

These are a bit unusual, as they are designer collars, but we get a lot of compliments for them when we are in town with our wolfies, which is so nice. I don't yet make leather ones yet, but may do at some point. At the moment I just want to be able to make up a size chart for all sizes. So many thanks for helping me do this with your measurements. My main aim is to make nice collars that are really comfortable on the dogs and cannot do them any harm. I have started selling them recently. In fact I delivered three to a friend a few days ago and she ordered two more right away. I was soooo chuffed!! lol

Hi Carakeel... As you may know,Sally is a Lurcher (possibly a whippet cross),so she wears a special leather fishtail collar. Hers measures 18",is 2.5" at it's widest,and 1" for the narrow bits. I buckle it at the tightest hole-so her neck is about 12.5".... that's near the top of her neck behind her ears-not further down.

Weird to think a JR has a neck bigger than my girl that must weigh 4x as much!

Maybe you can branch out into cats' collars in the future if these do well?

Meggie's neck is approximately 10" round! So collar would have to be about 13" I would think. She's a dainty little lady!!

Carakeel, the collars look lovely I would love two, but only about 1/2" wide. I only put them on when we go into town, or when walking Tally when I want her back quickly (Fred does as he's told Tally ...well Tally is short for Tally Ban!) The trouble is they are both "ratters", (now that could be confusing, but you know what I mean), but she certainly earns her keep more than Fred!

Carakeel, I love them as they look so soft, I hate to see an animal wearing a hard, uncomfortable collar ! Do you make them for cats ?

We have a lurcher cross (apparently) she is a rescue dog from a rescue home (the original owner WAS a friend of ours) so she is now a rscued dog from a recue home
Her neck circumference is 15 inches.

She thought she was getting a new collar when I measured her, sheloves collars. Has a pretty pink one on for her lead and a bigger one with metallic doggies on.

Thanks you all for your answers. I will stick mainly to making larger collars, except for friends, AB friends included of course. It is really fiddly making small collars, so I don't think I will be making any for cats, so sorry. I am waiting for some narrow trims to come in and will put them on my photobucket if anyone wants to look at them for the smaller collars.

As for slave collars ... hmmmm, hadn't thought of that, lol! Sounds interesting, hehe!
