Where/what does the name originate from?

It is simply based on the superstition that - if that particular type of spider crawled over you - you would have good luck, particularly in money matters. Like most superstitions, it is hard to discover their absolute origins. The earliest recorded use of the phrase as such dates back only to the 19th century, however.
