Is there an age limit for people wishing to rehome dogs?

Some shelters won't rehome young dogs with older applicants due to the risk of them not coping and the dog bouncing back.

There are a lot of older dogs that need rehoming and most rescue centres are happy for old dogs to go to older owners - in fact it is ideal. A lot of these older dogs are difficult to rehome because people want young dogs. All the older dogs need are a loving home, gentle walks, food and tlc and many rescue organisations will pay towards medical expenses if you home an elderly dog.

It's something I will do as I get older!! I can't imagine life without a dog.

My first rehome was a little dog who had been abandoned on the Yorkshire Moors, the RSPCA reckoned she was about 10................I had her for 4 lovely years.

That is lovely Craft. Even if I could rehome a elderly dog for the last few months of it's life and give it love and security I would do so.

There is actually an organisation called The Oldies Club which specialises in rehoming older dogs. They will certainly consider older people as most of their dogs have only a limited time anyway. My breed rescue will allow older people to adopt if the dog is of a certain age, as we are always there to take it back if anything happens. Unless of course we are all wrong and its the lower age limit you mean!

Thank you LoftyLottie - we are (young)72, and from having four dogs originally we are now down to one - aged 13 - we can't think of having a puppy now, so would certainly go for an older dog who needs plenty tlc.Mags.

My dear mum (at 87) gave a home to Wilfred (an elderly Border collie from Wiccaweys BC Rescue) and she had him for 7 wonderful years - a mutual adoration society. We were all heartbroken when sadly he died a year ago. Mum is now 95 and is looking for another companion of the canine kind! But it has to be the right one..........

Wow, good on your mum. I expect she'll want a lapdog as I don't suppose she'll be able to walk it. I reckon I'll be like that. My last one was 13 when I took him on. Had him for 3 years until he died. It was love at first sight on both sides I think.
