There are a lot of older dogs that need rehoming and most rescue centres are happy for old dogs to go to older owners - in fact it is ideal. A lot of these older dogs are difficult to rehome because people want young dogs. All the older dogs need are a loving home, gentle walks, food and tlc and many rescue organisations will pay towards medical expenses if you home an elderly dog.
There is actually an organisation called The Oldies Club which specialises in rehoming older dogs. They will certainly consider older people as most of their dogs have only a limited time anyway. My breed rescue will allow older people to adopt if the dog is of a certain age, as we are always there to take it back if anything happens. Unless of course we are all wrong and its the lower age limit you mean!
My dear mum (at 87) gave a home to Wilfred (an elderly Border collie from Wiccaweys BC Rescue) and she had him for 7 wonderful years - a mutual adoration society. We were all heartbroken when sadly he died a year ago. Mum is now 95 and is looking for another companion of the canine kind! But it has to be the right one..........
