We had a new featherboard fence erected around the garden just over 1 year ago and have been noticing what appeared to be some sort of fence wrot around the entire length of the fence at a constant height of between 24" - 28".
We have just discovered that it is most probably local cats which are scratching our fence during the night time.
Can anyone recommend a clear spray or varnish etc., or any other ideas which we could use to keep the cats from distroying our fence completely.

There are plenty of sprays you can buy which deter cats - unfortunately, scratching wood is the nature of the beast.
Had a similar problem with cats...unfortunately they ruined the wooden posts on my decking and also the door of my chalet...got a spray from a petshop which seems to work, but you need to re-apply after it has rained.
BTW its called Cat a pult..
