I have a large castrated rabbit. He is a lovely boy, the trouble is because he is so big, he can't reach round and clean his rear end, consequently he gets huge lumps of pooh stuck round his anus which I have to soak off with warm water. It is an unpleasant experience for him and me and I don't know what to do. Has anybody experienced this with their rabbit and if so have you any advice. He has loads of hay to eat with some dry food and carrots.
We had a Californian Rex doe and she was a giant but never had difficulty cleaning her bottom, but we had a dwarf who did, we got a kitty litter tray with warm water and trained the bunny go in there and it self cleaned her bum.
Sorry meant to say it is very dangerous for a rabbit to have a dirty bottom as it attracts flies which lays eggs and the maggots eat the rabbit - very very distressing for the rabbit.
What about cabbage and greenery like grass and brussel sprouts?
Same thing happens with my lion head dwarf rabbit her fur so long. I hold her and my daughter clips her fur all round anus. She does not like it (neither daughter nor rabbit) but keeps still long enough to clip. She now uses a cat tray with crystal litter and that seems to keep the pooh rubbed off her fur. Fortunately she likes the tray and crystals.
