So it looks like its somebody who has just got a dog who works, and has just set off for work. It sounds like a pretty big dog, if that makes any sense. I can't see anything, but its ever so loud and sad. Would this new phone number for the police non emergencies be worth a ring??

*howling!
Worth a try, but you need to find out where the dog is first. RSPCA would be the obvious choice, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to come out.
Some dogs howl as a breed characteristic when perfectly happy- my daughter's Malamutes howl for the sheer pleasure of it- still sounds sad- so I'd see if you can find out a bit more first to be honest.

Its just started 2 days ago NOX, have never heard it before so we think somebody has acquired a new dog. And just realised, about 150 metres from my road there is a block of flats - I bet its in there.
Bet they're not supposed to keep a dog in a flat - do you know who manages the block?

Ummm, yes i think so. Just rang 101 the new police number and they said they really needed an address, and to try the RSPCA and see what they can do. Im sat in my lounge and can hear it with my patio doors shut! Am due to go to work in an hour and can't bear to think the poor thing is locked up somewhere.

Well that told me! Just rang RSPCA and they told me to stay out of it. said the dog could just be new to its surroundings, somebody may be looking after it for a while, and I dont know at all if the dog is sad. What do you reckon?
As I said earlier, some dogs howl for pleasure, seems for once the RSPCA might actually be talking some sense. If it continues for hours on end relentlessly it's maybe something to be worried about, but for now as I said earlier I'd just monitor it for the next 24 hours or so.
If it continues, you really need to contact your local council dog warden. It's part of their responsibilities and I've always found them very helpful.
I agree with linedancer. The dog warden would be the best person to call.
Ring the council and they will put you through. Our Dog Warden is fantastic.
In my experience the RSPCA are useless (sorry to anyone I might offend, but it is only in my experience). A small van pulled up opposite my house when I lived in Bristol. A man got out with two dogs. Then he put the dogs back in the van and shut them in. They were in there for at least 24 hours by themselves and it was freezing cold. The RSPCA man did arrive, eventually but reckoned they were perfectly all right. They probably were, but I thought it was very wrong to leave them like that. Incidentally, it was not me who called the RSPCA so there were others whio thought the same as me.
Told you the RSPCA would do nothing! The Dog Warden may investigate from a welfare point of view if given an address, but if its a complaint about noise then its the Environmental Health Dept.
i would write on a piece of paper
"Hi just letting you know your dog is barking its head off when you leave it.
its driving some of your neighbours nuts.please could you try and resolve it.i
f it is not your dog and you know which house it is please pass it on,your kindly"

write about six of these and post them in any house you think is "guilty"
when i did it i put all six through the same door.seemed to work
good luck
Smo - you're doing all you can for this dog, bless you. Hope it can be resolved soon.
A friend, trying to study, was exasperated by a dog that barked loudly day in, day out, when its owners left it alone in their nearby flat. One morning, he put a large bar of laxative chocolate through their letterbox. Next day, the dog was gone!
Great idea feeding a dog chocolate- it probably fecking died rather than they rehomed it because it sh1t everywhere- bl00dy morons.
don't come on here very often but - sorry - Heathfield that's not a good solution - who knows what happened to that poor dog?
I entirely agree.
heathfield - that moron would no longer be my friend .....
Your friend obviously didn't know how poisonous chocolate is for dogs...
