We brooded 3 Welsumer eggs, two hatched live - only one survived 24 hours. He/she is now three weeks old but doesn't really seem to have grown much - he/she is in with bantem chicks not much older but really much, much bigger - this one still looks like a five day old chick. Is eating/drinking/scratching well, occasionally has a bit of a problem with defecating, so is given a drop of diluted olive oil and has his/her bum bathed with warm water but is other wise is bright and well. Any ideas as to why he/she is so little? Many thanks

One possibility.... the Welsummer pair was not in good condition when the eggs was fertilised. Or the pair was related, this often happens when folks don't swap breeding stock blood.
Possibly it is just a lot smaller in proportion to the other 2 and you do not notice how it is growing.

Thank you Wildwood and Eddie 51 - can't see anything wrong with the small one at all but it definitely looks like a week old chick instead of a three week old - anyway, will continue to give it lots of tlc and see what happens.
