Dental problem

At my check up last week, I mentioned a tooth that had been niggling me. Apparently I'd chipped some filling so went back yesterday for it to be dealt with. I'd been fine all week actually, no niggles. It was a very deep filling, nearly to the nerve but not touching it. Once the injections wore off, I felt fine until I went to bed. Whether brushing my teeth set something off, I don't know, but I was lying there with the area throbbing, real toothache. I tried orajel but that didn't help much, so took paracetamol and managed to get off to sleep. I'm still taking pills this morning and my jaw bone is aching like mad - feels like I've been punched there. I've had many fillings in my time but can't recall feeling like this the day after. Am I now looking at a root canal treatment or does the area just need time to settle down?

Once the injections wore off, it started to ache. Went back to Dentist 3 times, she replaced filling, and put a dressing under the filling. It was xrayed, but nothing could be found as to why it was hurting me.
I was going to have a root filling, as the Dentist thought this would be the answer, but the price of £900 put me off (private). Anyway, I didn't go back, and even though it took a while with painkillers, it did settle down. It is still sensitive if, I say, touch the filling with a spoon when eating. Metal against metal.

Thanks for all your replies. I know the dentist spent a long time putting 'things' in the cavity - one smelled like disinfectant or bleach. It's five hours since I took painkillers and it's beginning to feel a bit easier - been losing myself with cleaning the car and gardening so fingers crossed it will settle without further treatment.
Gingejbee - you would think the dentist would know to line the cavity first.
