Disposing of a dead dog
36 Answers
I know this may make me sound morbid but my dog is not getting any younger.
If I was to one morning find my dog had died during the night do I just take her body to the vet to make sure she is disposed of properly or what? Also how much does it cost?
Obviously this is opposed to the time when it may become necessary to have her put to sleep and I do not want to have her buried in the garden or taken to a pet cemetery etc.

It's also worth contacting a local animal sanctuary/rescue centre as some of these offer a burial service [or that sort of thing] for similar cost...and your money will be going to a worthwhile cause. Hope this helps or gives you some ideas.
And to add to what the others have said, I have always found my vets to be very professional but kind when it comes to having friends put to sleep or after death.
Your problem is one that I used to worry about when I had my first dog.
I hope that it all goes smoothly and painlessly (for both of you) when the time comes.

To the op, this was a question I asked on her many moons ago. I had an ageing Great Dane that I was buggered if I knew what I was going to to do with if I found he had passed in the night!
As others have said, talk to your vet, they will have measures in place for such eventualities and would/should help you out for a small fee. My vets have always been of great help at times like these.

Weecalf's tale reminds me of the story of a friend of my late mother. It's almost 50 years ago now, but said mother's friend was sitting on the bus en route to a hospital appointment, for which he had to provide a urine sample. The only container she could find was an empty half-sized bottle of whisky. This lay on the top of her shopping bag. A shifty-looking bloke got on the bus and sat down beside her. When she got off the bus at the hospital she found that the bottle had disappeared.
Just out of interest, do you have to pay for disposal if you have an animal put down at the vet`s? On two occasions, I have had animals put down. One was my first pet (a little white rabbit) and the second was a cat. We were not charged for the disposal of either. I have long said that vets fees have increased since the advent of pet insurance but how can they justify charging so much?
