A close friend of mine has told me about a treatment to clean your system out drinking only salt water over a course of 5 days. I would like to get a second opinion on this matter from you ABers. Can you tell me just how to do this and what type of salt would I need?

I have been told to put 2 dessertspoons of water in 2 and a half litres of hot water and then drink that each day for 5 days in a row. Is this the correct method and have any of you ever done this?

Many thanks for your kind answers past and present.

I think your friend is having a laugh. I can`t think of anything worse than drinking salt water and nor can your kidneys.
Yes, that sounds like a LOT more than the recommended maximum daily salt intake.
I think it would be fine provided you don't include the salt
Recipe for disaster - extremely dangerous!
I'm cleaning myself out with Rioja tonight.
Sounds as though you'll be cleaned out after non stop vomiting for 5 days
I'm pretty sure my dad told me he used to drink a cup of salt water to make himself throw up when he wanted a day off school so I can't imagine it's going to be all that good for you.
Silly fad, your body cleanses itself no need to shock your colon into doing what it should with a good diet.
owl juice is best!
Why do you want to clean yourself out Jonny?
Which part of your body needs cleaning?

Probably more useful for washing your feet..
Good grief. Salt water is a classic emetic, something to make you vomit if you've ingested poison.

Too much salt is seriously bad for your overall health and 2 dessert spoons is way too much. 6 grams a day is the recommended daily amount. Your kidneys won't cope, if you can keep the salt water down in the first place.

When I was a reckless teen on a bender I would drink a small glass of salt water to make me vomit. And it did!

Well, thanks for your speedy and kind answers, folks. I value your opinion and will not be doing this due to risk of vomiting. Is there anything else on the market which could do the same thing but is not salt? Have any of you heard anything similar to this without drinking brine?
Dynamite?
my friends swears by drinking dilute aloe vera, she buys it in Holland and Barrett. Personally, I think the body cleanses itself pretty well if you drink lots of water and go to the loo sastifactorily and regularly, and don't put toxins into your body. You don't need these faddy methods.
Have you actually got a problem? Why do you feel you need to clean out your system?
@Johnny - Drinking salt water would be a very silly thing to do. Not to be recommended.

As for this idea of a kind of cleanse, or "detox" - what, precisely, do you imagine you are detoxing? The body is a wonderfully adapted mechanism of intermeshing organs, all homeostatically controlled, and this idea of detoxing is largely a fad designed to part people from their money.

If you wish to reduce some of the stimulants that your body is exposed to - coffee, alcohol, nicotine etc, and if you wish to restrict the calories your body consumes, these are worthy aims - but the idea of a detox to remove accumulated toxins is, simply, bunkum.
Try Fibrogel.
