Is there any proof that using Garlic keeps them away? A friend of mine who likes the outdoors swears by using that garlic cream on your face you buy in Tescos does the trick.

not sure about that but when we were on holiday in tenerife a few years ago we met a woman who lived there and she drank indian tonic water because it contains quinine and she said she never got bitten.

Not sure if that would work but taking a very cold shower every 10 minutes does the trick.

The problem here afaic is that this is from the Daily Mail and therefore is probably b*llocks.
Either way 100% DEET (diethyl toluamide based insect repellant) is the way to go, and citronella candles if sitting outdoors on a warm balmy eve !

i've never in all my years been bitten by an insect
but in the last 5 weeks ive had 3 nasty bites with lots of swelling itching and then painful to the touch, its mosquitoes that are on the attack, just advised to keep an eye on the bites and take antihistamine tablets
.the little bleeders !

methyl - indian tonic water certainly contains quinine, otherwise G&T drinkers like myslf would have rebelled years ago. The Sainsbury's brand I'm drinking at the moment merely lists 'quinine' as one of its constituents, but others I've drunk tell you exactly which quinine compound it contains.

It works too. Though I live here in the heart of the world's worst malaria belt in Surrey I have never suffered from it. It's the T in the G&T that does it.
