African food shortage!

Just interested in peoples thoughts about the above. My other half believes we are making things worse by sending food supplys and interfering with nature. By sending them food he believes that they will multiply even more and the problem will worsen! He blames Bob gelddof.

It is obvious that after more than a century of free education in the UK we still have illiterates and people who can't spell the simplest of words. The lack of grammar is appalling.
Maybe we should abolish education.

'supplys' should be 'supplies'.
Geldoff should start with a capital G and has only one f and one d. Geldof.

Does your other half think Britain is the only country sending aid? Does he think Africa is a country? Does he believe Christian Aid, Oxfam, Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, Save the Children and all the other charities didn't exist before Geldof?

Let him tell a mother of a child starving to death that there is nothing to be done, it is population control.

I partly agree with the posters husband.

It is all very well making Christmas records and having Comic Relief, but constantly sending food over does not stop what is the problem. That problem is breeding.

African culture and religion does mainly not allow for contraception. Once the surplus population is controlled, the food will enable them to be more healthy and more productive.

As it stands, money is raised mainly to send food over for an ever increasing population that does not use contraception and all who live longer.

It was also help if any monies sent was directed at those that need it and not via certain countries corrupt governments.

As for blaming Bob Geldof, the only only thing I blame him for are appalling records and poor dress sense.

The biggest problem in Africa is corrupt politicians who plunder the countries wealth for their own enjoyment. If the wealth of the country was put back into helping the population the situation would not be so dire.
Also former colonial rulers were no better. They plundered the wealth of Africa with little regard to the native inhabitants. Great Britian,Portugal and in the horn Italy being the main culprits.

Your other half makes a valid point as keeping a disasterous situation going is no long term solution. However it would be inhumane not to feed those starving to solve their immediate desperate need. Mosrt will consider that the priority. But what is really needed is to tackle the issue on multiple fronts if one has any desire of solving this premanently.

Comparison with feeding the other half or kids is not a reasonable comparison.

Issues like over-breeding are a very definite hindrance to the cure, and do need to be addressed – but that’s easier said than done. Educating a fixed and unreceptive mind is not a simple task. Teaching farming techniques and setting up irrigation systems, as some charities are doing, help (although quite how that is done in areas of permanent drought I really don’t know) but as others have said corrupt governments are often a stumbling block, pocketing the money with no intention of using it for the purpose it is given. In the meantime, we must remember that people are people. We can’t just ignore them, or write them off as a lost cause. Until such time as a real solution is found, we can only do what we can to help alleviate what is a terrible, and seemingly enduring, human tragedy.

Africa is a very wealthy continent. Oil, gold, diamonds, platinum, chrome in fact just about every mineral you can think of. If the wealth from these natural resources were used properly to sink bore holes a d feed the people the effects of natural disasters like drought would be eased and the need for aid diminished.

"African culture and religion " - you do realise that Africa is made up of 57 countries, each with their own culture, and Encyclopaedia Britannica states 45% of Africans are Christians and 40% Muslim. To say African culture does mainly not allow contraception is wrong.

It's not that it doesn't allow contraception but cultural habits are hard to break. It was the thing to have many children as a lot did not survive infancy and the old people relied on their children to care for them.
