Thread a darning needle with some strong fine thread (fishing line perhaps). About a foot longer than the combined poles.
Tie the loose end of the thread to the shock cord.
Holding the pole(s) vertically, drop the darning needle down the pole and it will emerge tother end with thread.
Carefully pull the train of thread / cord through till you can fasten off back end of cord.
Continue pulling train through till cord emerges from end of pole (now under tension) and fasten off. It may help to have a second person here to hold pole whilst you do this.
