Can anyone suggest some shrubs to go in a small north facing front garden, often in shadow, and with heavy clay soil?   My friend wants something that will grow fairly tall for privacy purposes ...

You might find something amongst these  andrewlee & out of all of those I'd recommend the choisyas, they are lovely. 

(Sorry to just post a link but you can see what the plants look like as well as lots of information).

try the cottoneaster hedge. It will grow tall and is both pretty and hardy. If it will grow in my hard clay soil and arid country it will pretty much grow anywhere i figure.
