Was there a time when performing dog acts were fairly common? I think I remember seeing them on the TV show, Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

...I can't answer....until I've stopped sniggering at the image of a 'performing pouch'....
Usually the Royal variety show and Sunday night at the London Palladium had performing dogs, or some speciality act, not sure i ever liked them much.
Have you never seen one, Eccles lol.
I like the ads with the grinnings dogs with false teeth........they showed one on HIGNFY last week and I've never seen Hislop laugh so much.
that didn't work, sorry...
it did but didn't expect all those bits, the photo by the way always makes me laugh.

And if you scroll down the picture of Smiley Riley you'd see he has an infectious grin :-)
I completely get the 'aaahhh' factor that means that people who would no more pay for live entertainment than pull their own lungs out will pick up the phone and vote for this - but who can honestly say that having seen it once, they would actually travel and pay to see it again - ever?

Once you've seen a dog on its back legs, and on its tummy ... that's it, they don;t actually do anything else, so to say it is limited as entertainment wouold be a considerable understatement.

Could be worse though - Michael McIntyre could be on!!!
