Importing Stray Dogs From Abroad
I am aware that many charities in the UK rescue dogs abroad and bring them to the UK for re-homing.
It costs roughly £200 per dog to import one dog from Romania, for example. Surely it must be possible to help fund proper animal sanctuaries over there if people are more concerned about Romanian dogs than UK ones.
There are too many abandoned, neglected and abused dogs here in the UK which are destroyed because there are not enough people willing to house them. It seems senseless to me to bring in even more.
What is your opinion?

This charity seems to import the dogs before they have new owners.

Not at all, woofgang but it is a fact that there are only so many homes for too many dogs.
A dog lover could do so much more for dogs in need in the UK by rehoming one in need and using the cash difference to help another dog or dogs in some way, perhaps helping a Romanian dog lover with the cost of neutering his or her pet.

I think one answer is the terrible conditions that dogs abroad have to endure. Not saying that there are not similar tales in this country but the majority of dogs in rescues over here are well treated even if they don't find new homes. Most of those rescued from abroad are in very poor condition and their 'sanctuaries' are barely able to feed them let alone offer them medical help or a better life.
That Norfolk charity has spent £10000 on the cost of importing 50 dogs from Romania, that is in addition to the normal costs every animal charity has.
It just seems to be a wasteful use of resources. How many Romanian dogs could be neutured, bought to health and rehomed in Romania for that sort of money?
Travelling for 3 days by road in a cage cannot be good for dogs that have been suffering.
