Bleeding cat?

My cat is either fat, pregnant or was pregnant.  I noticed that she has been spotting (bleeding) from her backend. Do you know what this is caused from?  Did she maybe have kittens somewhere and abandon them?  I noticed blood yesterday, so, I locked her up in a clean cage.  There is still signs of "spotting" on the clean blankets.  What could this be?
