Dog Breeds

Wonder if anyone can help, please. Would a standard poodle and toy poodle be classed as the same breed of dog (i.e.poodle) or two different breeds? Thanks

Athough they are both Poodles, they are classed as different breeds. In fact there are actually three sizes, and they are listed as Poodle (Miniature), Poodle (Standard) and Poodle (Toy). Oddly Miniatures are not the smallest, they are the middle size with Toys being the smallest. They cannot be registered if they are crossed, they have to be bred with their own size. For championship shows (such as Crufts) judges have to be passed for each individual size to judge them, i.e. a Standard Poodle judge is not automatically passed to judge the other two sizes, although many are passed for a three. Same with breeders, some specialise in just one size and others have two or three sizes. This is the same with several other breeds, some are classified by size and some by coat, e.g. Chihuahua (Long Coat) and Chihuahua (Smooth Coat). Some breeds are even in different groups, such as the Schnauzers - Giant Schnauzers are in the Working Group, but Miniature Schnauzers and the original Schnauzers (sometimes wrongly called Standard) are in the Utility Group. Dachshunds have six different breeds, in two sizes and three coats - Miniature Dachshunds and Dachshunds (again often wrongly termed Standard Dachshunds) and they come in Long Haired, Smooth Haired and Wire Haired, all of which are different breeds.
