Not the best of days, it's just been confirmed that Eddy (Todays Avatar) is suffering from the Canine version of Alzheimers, we've been keeping a diary of strange behavior for a month or two, which has got worse since we moved (6 weeks), daft things like getting stuck in the kitchen by standing behind the hinge-side of the open door waiting for it to open, and getting stuck in corners by not thinking to turn around. He's just turned 8 yrs, he's fit as a butchers dog physically, and has a really nice disposition but is becoming a case of Care in the Community.
Never come across this before, does anyone else have experience of it, and any helpful advice would be welcome, don't think he's in any physical discomfort, just confused. Thanks.

I know that with cats there are plug-in pheromone diffusers that can help with some issues. There is a dog one - not sure exactly what it does.

Oh bless him, he looks so gorgeous. What a shame. My cat is 20 and she sits and stares at the wall sometimes but the rest of the time she's back to normal so not worried about her.
Have you had him all his life baldric? BTW, how inconsiderate of you to move house tut! I think you should move back again:-)

We've had him since 8 wks old, this has been noticed in last 5-6 mths, he's much loved and will get as much help from us as possible, in fact he's led across my lap as I'm typing, all 8+ stones of him, spoiled or wot?

My dog had this and he was otherwise fit and healthy ! Its so distressing though to watch them get to 'the lights are on but there's no one home' stage.
He used to ask to go out into the garden for the loo, then just sit down on the lawn, as soon as you let him back indoors then he would wee/poo. He also stood randomly and stared into space and it just got the better of him when he began toileting in his bed and laying in it. Vet told me it was kinder to have him PTS he was beyond pills. Awww I loved him so much, he was my world.

Yes I think perhaps it is something all dog owners should tuck away in case it is ever needed.
Baldric, it's lovely to hear of a dog that spends its whole life with one owner. Too many are treated like a piece of rubbish and thrown all over the place. As for your poor boy, I hope the pills work and he has more happy years with you. Please let us know how he goes on. Thanks.

Ladyb, we have a second Dobie, a bitch, rescued her at 2 yrs old, she's now 6, they are with us for the duration

My dog stopped recognising me - would come over and give my trouser turn up a good long sniff as if to say - ' I know this - but I dont know from where....'

He used to walk into things but I thought that was because he was getting blind.

Otherwise seemed happy and fed well

so we went on feeding him until he keeled over from something else.

Baldric, you've probably already found this article for yourself but just in case I'll attach it as it is quite positive. It says a dog can lead a normal and happy life with the right treatment. I'm afraid I am a very impatient person and would be wanting to get started on the treatment straight away. I wonder what it is your vet is waiting for, did he/she say?

And there are two questionnaires to fill in if you want to. I would be really interested to hear how you get on if you do take them. Perhaps my cat would benefit from this treatment as well.
