Ughhhh What Was It ... ?

Planting out some bedding plants today and in one old plant pot came across an ugly looking thing! It was about an inch long, quite plump and had two tiny black eyes and a short black spike at the other end. It was a sort of coppery brown colour. I looked up leather jacket on google, but I couldn't see any like the one I saw.

Definitely excel, looking at pics of leatherjackets, this thing is much, much bigger and fatter !!

perhaps it was, er, sitting down, so you couldn't see its legs - or it was just beginning to hatch from larva to caterpiller?

I actually picked it up on my trowel and saw it was smooth all over, but yes, you could have a point there because the more I think of it, the more I think it was some kind of caterpillar larvae. I know where it is, so I may go back and check on it, if I can pluck up the courage - it's those eyes !

Thanks for all your input, I've really enjoyed this thread. Conclusion, I reckon it is some sort of huge moth larvae. If I see it 'emerge', I will post again !
