Don't they eat grass and make themselves vomit when they have an upset tummy?

I have three dogs ..... rather than run the risk of making a mistake, I'd speak to the vet.

I shall speak to ther vet but I just wondered if anyone had used anything successfully for mild indigestion - nothing serious, just the sort of thing where we'd simply take a Rennies. She's a hound, so does tend to scavenge a bit if she can (doesn't often get the chance) but sometimes she manages to get her snout into the birds' food - or if I've given her raw vegetables when I'm cooking - she especially loves cauliflower, asparagus, broccoli stalks - she then rushes out next morning to eat grass. I think I must stop giving them to her. Thanks for the link maizie - herbal tea might be a bit difficult to get down her :o)!

hi Daisymay. As Mazie pointed out, herbal teas are very good for animals with indigestion. If you make some chamomile or mint tea and offer it to your dog he may drink it as animals do tend to know whats good for them, thats why they eat grass to induce vomiting. Its worth a try anyway. A small drop of peppermint oil on one of his favorite treats may work too.

You're right about animals know what's good for them, Sebf - I knew a dog who would nibble digitalis leaves on her daily walk - the owner told me she had a heart condition.

Hiya daisy...my boss has shih tzu's...and treats one of them for indegestion,with half a Zantac tablet, but this was after a consultation with the vet... incidentally..I'm having a similar problem with my 2 cats...and the vet has given them liquid Ranitidine... the same thing thats in alot of indegestion relief tablets etc...but I'd get some advice first! Burned toast is very good for stomach ailments in dogs, or if you are rural go to your local feed mill and get some charcoal tablets.

How about live yogurt? I've known folk give it to sheep with digestion grumbles.

Depends what food she is on - she may not be digesting or utilising the food properly, particularly if it is one made up with a lot of cereal or filler. What are her poos like? If she is doing large, soft or runny poos then she is not getting the most out of her food. They should be like small hard sausages.

Our poodle used to love mints, but they had to be Trebor! She could hear the sweet tin cupboard being opened a mile away and would walk over hot coals to get them. I had a similar thing with Hamish, but with ginger, which is also calming to upset tummy's. He would have killed for a ginger nut!

One of mine suffers from occasional bouts of colitis which start with a rumbly tummy, and the vet prescribed Cimetedine, but I wouldnt give any of the dogs any human medication with veterinary advice.
