Paddling Pool Algae

I have loads of algae in our paddling pool (it's 10ft wide by 2 1/2 feet deep) I've read about 'shocking' the pool with chlorine and killing the algae but I'm scared of chemicals and not sure where to start.
Can anyone give ma an 'idiots guide' to killing the algae/cleaning the pool and maintaining healthy water please?
I really don't want to have to empty the pool and refil it (It seems like such a waste of water)
Thanks in advance.

i have a 18' above ground pool, i put multifunction chlorine granules (google it) in nearly every day it keeps the algae away but i have a really large pump which distributes it around the pool.
If i was you i would be emptying the pool and starting again then just make sure you keep on top of it..
