If you wish to mate them the best thing to do is wait until your female hamster is in heat and then place the male in the cage with her for 20 minutes or so. Only when the female is in heat will they not fight. Female hamsters go into heat every four days, you can tell if she is in heat by stroking her back. If she is she will press her body against the bottom of the cage, remain still and raise her tail.
Also, make sure the female is at least 3 months old before you breed her. If she is too young there is a very high risk of having many problems.
The gestation period for a hamster is only 16 days so make sure the cage is clean about 4 days before this and that there is plenty of bedding, food and water available for when the litter arrive. Make sure to get the paper bedding and not the fuzzy stuff!! Do not touch your hamster or the babies for AT LEAST 2 weeks. If you do, the mother will eat the babies as they will have your smell on them and she will reject them.
Good Luck!
