We have had a mouse in the kitchen now for several weeks, have tried humane trap as we dont wish to hurt it, has not worked, it is chewing packaging and leaving droppings everwhere, very reluctant to use poison, any suggestions please

Cats are usually pretty good mice catchers!

Apart from that, you could phone the environmental department of the local Council for suggestions. Good luck.

Would you like to borrow my Merlin or Millie, they will soon catch for you!....   Only kidding I'm always saving mice from the jaws of my cats

I agree with smudge and phone the Environmental Department.  Good Luck.    :-)

It all depends on which type of mouse it is, if its a field mouse, sponge cake or scotch pancakes in a humane trap work every time, if its a grey, short of calling someone in, put poison down, providing you don't have pets or young children.

I've always managed to catch mice that my cats have brought into the house in humane traps with chocolate as bait, they love it.
put chocolate in a slightly upwards tilted milk bottle. They can get in but can't get out again

I love this question about baiting mouse traps - everybody always seems to have a favorite recipe.

I tried the mice in our house with peanut butter, chocolate, raisins and cheese.

My mice seem to be real traditionalists they only ever went for the cheese.

You might want to consider that if you think you've got one mouse then you've probably got several. It got in somewhere and as the weather turns cooler others are likely to get in the same way. They can get through the most infeasibly small spaces. Fill any gap that you can get a ball point pen into.

Go into B+Q they have mouse traps, that you put a bit of chocolate or peanut butter in, as the mouse runs into the trap the front closes, does'nt kill the mouse, but you can then take it outside and let it go, they are about 4. good luck

We had problems with mice in my house, and used humane traps but they kept on comming back! Now we have these things that you plug into a socket and they apparently emit a high pitch sound (that only the mice hear) and it seems to have done the trick! I'll try and find out the name for you.

If you catch them it is no use just taking them outside and releasing them, they will come straight back in again. My daughter catches the mice her cats bring in and takes them 20 miles away on her way to work. I often wonder what people thimk if they see her doing it!

Ok, if you type in 'ultrasonic mouse deterrent' into google you should get loads of the electronic thingys i was talking about. They seem to range from about 15 - 35. These look like the ones we have: www.queenswood.co.uk (go to search and type in mouse)
