A father, his two sons, and another young man pleaded guilty in court yesterday to charges of animal cruelty. They had set their dogs to attack cats they'd captured and also journeyed into the countryside to bait badgers. Isn't it curious that when Chavs do this kind of thing they end up in the dock, but if you got yourself a red coat and a horse and you could indulge your bloodlust to your black hearts content?

It does depend on your perception of animal cruelty.

Fox hunters believe that the fox has at least a fighting chance of getting away from the hounds, and is therefore not 'cruel' in the same way that setting dogs on a cat, or badger baiting is cruel.

It's too fine a distinction for me, I have to admit, but that is their position, hence the idea that fox hunting is not a 'cruel' sport.

(Ecept it is!! And indefensible as well!!!)

I want to watch in a vilely curious sort of way, but I won't - I couldn't bear to see cats (who are presumably somebody's loved pets) being attacked by the dogs. It would upset me more than I can say.

It was shown on local BBC news so is probably not really that bad. It's the idea that people can take pleasure in killing animals that would make you despair of some sections of humanity.
