Getting Another Dog

If I ever ever ever got another dog - could he/she not be trained on a litter tray like a cat. If not why not - thanks for your answers.

wish i had have known with Mr Harv - he was small enough and still not a bad size - but too old to train now.

if you can't or don't intend to walk a dog,
don't get another one.

What's wrong with your garden or the usual walks where most dogs do their toileting...im sure yiu would pick up after he's been. Unless you live in a flat?

excuse me - I walk my dog when I can - out yesterday and at the weekend.

Oh I am staunch picker-upper - I am talking initially when I got the poor mite - he would have accidents in the house - cos he was a stray and I think he may have spent his last home locked outside all the time so didn't know the difference. Huh

I see..well as he's a rescue - and well done for giving a home to a rescue dog :) - you may have to start house training from scratch.

with me 10 years now - how I don't know - cos he is a runaway dog - slight opening of the door and he is away like a hare. God has been looking after him. I used to run after him all the time but the more I ran the more he ran away from me. I think he thought it was a game. But I am getting older. So I just wait until he comes back and so far so good. A funny character indeed.

thanks 2sp bought the mats - he pissed beside them. We have a thing now - if he has been outside for a while - I speak to him and say right TOILET - he rambles around and pees. Do that last thing at night too. But he was crying at 5.00 am to go so I am basically up from that time.

I can sort of see your point jenny, re another dog, id go for a very small breed, who still require exercise but not as much as harv. do you have a secure garden ?

yes anne do have a secure garden and you are right - would have to get not too feisty a dog as much as I love him. I always worry when he runs away he gets knocked down as I live in a cul-de-sac and there are loads of cars and he isn't street wise - cos he is always on a lead. But Anne once he goes I may never have another one cos of the breaking of the heart business. oh my.

Are you sure you want another dog? Think very carefully, didn't you say on an old thread that he restricts you so much and you have difficulty accepting invitations because you wouldn't be able to leave him that long?

that is right silliemillie - but he has restricted me but I have accepted restrictions rather than leave him now.

He is with me 24/7 - last time i was on holiday was 2008 - so I have accepted my lot it is him and me and to hell with holidays - re holidays been there done it and bought the t-shirt. He is my world now.

anyway sillie - I did say if I ever ever did - it wouldn't be because of the restrictions. It would be because I am 10 years older too - and my health is not the greatest now - so we'll see - Anyway Mr Harv is as a sprightly as a lamb.

It is possible to train a dog to go wherever you want but its not right to expect a dog to go inside where he lives, as its a natural thing for them to go away from where they eat and sleep. This is why crate training puppies works so well.
