I have a large pointer/beagle cross dog...he has short hair but he is shedding like no other dog i've ever had! Do these de-shedding tools work...does anyone have any feedback please? Been looking at the Furminator specifically. Thanks

I tried the furminator on my hound and thought it was crap, it just didn't get through the undercoat. The only thing that seems to work for us is a rake type thing, it's very basic but does the job.

By the way, my dog is an Akita cross and is very furry.
mine have got short hound type coats and i use a hound glove
I used the same sort of thing that rocky recommends with Max a long haired GSD and it work OK.The Furminator on the other hand was not much good.

Thanks guys....looks like i won't be wasting £32 on a Furminator!! Much obliged.
Well perhaps it's because I have a short-haired dog but I find the Furminator does the job nicely.
You're probably right Ladybirder, my dog's coat is longish and very thick, the furminator just couldn't get through it.
I have a short haired dog ( who is a massive shedder ) :) furminator works,
PP,try amazon for the furminator, cheapest I found,
rocky, the thing is, the first I knew of a Furminator was when I saw a lady in the park using one on her longhaired GSD. She was getting fistfuls of hair out and chucking it in the borders, for the birds to use for their nests, so she said. Of course I didn't know what she was using until I asked her but it was after that I bought one and have been very pleased with it and she was very pleased with hers:-)
OG not quite getting the point of your post:-(
Furminators work on the basis of removing loose dead hair so are not good for dogs that don't shed naturally like poodles (and a lot of the designer 'oodle' crosses). Although I use one on my GSD when he is moulting I use an ordinary rake for the rest of the time. For my short haired breed I rarely have to do anything to them at all, they moult twice a year and most of it comes off by just running your hand over them As someone said above try a hound glove, you can get either a rubber one for normal times or one with metal 'teeth' on one side for when they are shedding.

Also a slicker brush might be helpful.
That's probably why the furminator doesn't work for my dog, though he moults like billio the undercoat comes out in great big clumps rather than individual hairs.
