Good Morning Early Birds!
Wednesday already! I was late in last night, after a wonderful talk by a Spitfire pilot, Flt Lt. Maurice Freeman DFC. He talked of some of his exploits during the war, including how he met his wife, who at the time was a WRAF Sergeant in charge of meteorology. He told us how while flying a new Gloster Meteor he'd just picked up from the factory and an engine caught fire and the plane crashed twice! Hit the ground in a field, bounced over a lane, just missing a bus, then hit ground again in another field on the other side. He miraculously got out completely unhurt and was stood looking at the wreckage and getting his breath back, when a wee man came running up to him and threw his arms around him and said, 'I just missed you there lad!' It turned out he was the bus driver and thought he had caused the crash! A wonderful story by a wonderful man, Somehow he forgot to tell us how he got his DFC, while claiming he wasn't an 'Ace'.
I got home at 11.30.
When the Boaty came in.
As a result of the above I was late going out this morning. The spadger catcher was not around, so the dawn chorus was already in full voice. Something I always love to listen to.
I think most of the badgers were back from their night's foraging, the older ones relaxing and watching the youngsters playing. They just looked to make sure it was me then ignored me! A couple of squirrels who share the patch of woods with the badgers, were up and about, I'm usually too early to see therm. They looked a bit startled to see me and constantly stayed on the other side of the tree they were on, one eye peeping round the tree. Funny little characters. Single sentries on the rookery, so the gulls must have gone back where they belong.
Lots of deer grazing on the hillside, they are a bit too far for me to get to know them, but a friend keeps an eye on them. She also keeps an eye out for traps now too.
An early start today as I have to collect my crew from home for a charter, her husband has a hospital appointment so will be using their car.
Have a happy day everyone.
