What Could Possibly Go Wrong ...

... all we wanted was a pub lunch.
Group of half a dozen thirsty bird-watchers - pitch up at 12:30 at a carefully selected pub (tripadvisor 'best in area' etc etc) - but it was closed. On a Friday lunchtime?? Website says open, door says "come back at 6pm".
So we hopped off to another pub - been there before - nothing special, but OK for beer and food - sign outside says "lunches 12 'til 2" - barmaid says 'come back at 6pm'.
So (in something approaching desperation) we drove quite quickly to a third hostelry - usually OK for beer and cheap/quick food, but not quite what we had planned.
It took nearly an hour to produce half a dozen fish/chips/mushy - during which time the chav inhabitants compared tattoos and thongs whilst their vile sprogs ran riot.
I would say "how unlucky was that" - but then I remembered that the estimable gness was part of the group ...

Sort of. Newmarket is officially in Suffolk but, to all intents and purposes, it's really in Cambridgeshire. (It's impossible to get into Newmarket from any part of Suffolk without crossing into Cambridgeshire and then back into the tint part of Suffolk that surrounds Newmarket). The racecourse is about 37 miles from here, so I don't know the area very well but I'll try to think of somewhere nice in the area. (Avoid Newmarket town centre. It's depressing!)
