Planting Vegatables?

Am I too late to plant any type of vegatables in the North East of England (Durham) in mid-August (I should say sow seeds)?

You have plenty time to sow seed for an early crop of broad beans next year ... and dont forget the early crop seems to be less effected by black fly. Some onion sets can go in soon and they will also have a head start for next season.
White Lisbon Spring Onion Seeds will also benefit.

Thanks for that alavahalf;that's worthy of a full pint! Won't the frost and snow kill the broad bean seeds and wouldn't I need to put some fleece or something over the onion sets - don't forget I'm talking about the north east of England?

I gardened for many years in the N.E. The broad beans and spring onions willl be fine, I think that now is the time to plant Japanese onions Why not check out your local market and see if you can buy a few brassic a plants A visit to your local allotment society will be of considerable help

You can also plant leeks. You'll have to get the seedlings from a garden centre though.
