What is the difference between a typhoon and a hurricane? Is it just the words?

isn't a typhoon like a whirlwind?
I thought it was just geographical location, a typhoon is what its called in the east and a hurricane is west.Dont quote me on that though.
Lozzzz is right...you get typoons in the far east (thailand, Bali etc) and Hurricanes in the west (USA, west indies etc)
It's a bit like how you used to have tidal waves now we have Tsunamis!

Yeah , thanks lozzzz, I had suspected that. I was in the middle of a typhoon in Tokyo watching the news about a hurricane in Florida and the weather pictures were identical.
