Well, I suggest you ask the vet what else you could try, and possibly consider a second opinion or referral to a specialist.

Has he had a chest xray?  I suspect the early stages of a heart problem from what you've said.  Let us know how you get on.

When our dog developed a cough it was the onset of heart failure, so you definitely need to get back to the vet.

Sorry I can't be more positive.

was going to say heart problem too, ever so treatable, our dog had water tablets like a human...you need to have a very fixed schedule of tablets and pee breaks tho as there is NO waiting

thank you for your replies.

he had exrays on his chest,it did show some fluid round his heart.i think we have tried everything possible.i think, its probably something which may improve in time, hes on a very strict diet, and has lost a few kilos,so hopefully he will improve.

thanks

Simple as it may seem a persistant cough is also a symptom
of teeth problems particularly gingivitis, untreated it can lead to a host of problems including heart.
A simple cure for gingivitis,if your dog is drinking a reasonable amount of water is a whole walnut - in shell left in the water bowl.
My own dog was cured of g. within 3 days-the cough took aboutwo weeks to clear altogether.
one walnut lasts about a month - or until it sinks to the bottom
of the bowl.
Still use the walnut in the water for prevention.
Used to know the name of the active chemical that kills off
the bacteria-sadly the old grey cells are developing wrinkles and rust
