Bored.
Teething?
Not mature, yet. They grow out of it.
Boredom; anxiety; and a built-in natural instinct to chew.

Our B i t c h is 9, she still does it!
My dog is nine and she doesn't.
Because they aren't allowed to chew their friend's bed.
how old is dog? when do they do it? have you got any other pets?
Our dogs have never chewed their beds.
LOL @ OG. Mine never chewed her bed but she did eat most of a sofa.
Seriously, yes it's boredom and/or separation anxiety
The only dog I ever had who did it after puppyhood had a beanbag bed on the upstairs landing. I came home one day to an indoor avalanche all the way down the stairs bless her!

@ 2151 ^^
she was about 2½ when we took her on as a rescue, no idea what happened to her beforehand, in every other way she's good as gold.
My dog doesn't chew his bed, but he does dig it, to make it comfy I guess, which leads to it ripping.
Like fairytale, my dog digs and it leads to a tear, then whee, all the nice fluffy stuff appears! He's better now, see post about allergy. Does your dog have a nice, chewy toy for bedtime?
I now tell a bedtime story (rescue dog, v. anxious to start with) which uses the same word patterns and tone of voice.. I.e. 'Once upon a time there was a small, black dog called Tyke and Tyke lived with....' etc. Very short and silly, but his head is down before I've got to the end of the first sentence.
^^^ sorry, fairycakes!
fleas
Max never chewed his bed,he just wouldn't use it.Right from the start he adopted a corner of the room as his own so we put his bed there, he took one look dragged it out off the way made himself a nest with his blankets and settled down and ignored it,after a fortnight or so we gave up on it and gave it to Trish's sister for her springer pup who promptly demolished it.
Would you rather they chewed YOUR bed ?

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your replies.
I have two leonbergers, one is four and the pup is ten months.[the one who does the chewing of her bed!!]
She chews her bed when I go out, never leave her longer than three hours. She has plenty of toys to play with and chew!!
They have a great life, water rescuing, swimming, and doggie day care.
How can I stop this problem please? x
There is a product called 'Stopchew'. Have a look in Pets at Home . Alternatively, don't leave the dog for too long.
