I don't have cats, but my neighbours have three, and I cat-sit regularly for them.

Their tom is an outdoor cat, and he eats dry food, their queens are indoor cats and eat pouches.

Try both, and see what your cats eat - they will turn their noses up if they don't like food, and eat it if they do - a pretty good guage on if you are feeding them what they like.
I give the cat Felix pouches but I always have a few biscuits (Go Cat or Iams) in another bowl because I think eating dry food helps to prevent plaque forming on the teeth which can lead to gingivitis. Trouble is, the little devil won`t eat them but I do try.
I find that, with cats, it is best to give them what they demand to eat just to shut them up.

My two get their sachets at meal times and there is complete dry food available.

If they are going outside they might pick up a snack or two or might even bring something home for you.

:-)
As wolf says, you can always rely on cats to top up their diets by popping out to murder something in the garden!

Cats rarely miss out - they are survivors.
andy - I find it perplexing that your neighbour allows the boy cat to go out but not the girls. My girl cat is much fiercer than her soppy brother.

Both. Also water and cat milk (not cows' milk which has too much lactose).
My lot get canned food, which is topped up as needed. (i.e. I don't limit their intake. Most cats don't eat more than they need; none of mine are fat). They've also always got dried food available for them. They seem to prefer the canned stuff overall but will quite often ignore it and tuck into the dried stuff instead.

So, like Wolf63, I basically just let them have what they want (including their daily 'Dreamies' treat and occasional cans of sardines, plus whatever they can scrounge off my plate!). However it makes sense to get cats accustomed to dried food, as it means that they can be left on their own for a day or two if you need to go away.
A mixture - mine has Felix pouches and Royal Canin dry food plus a bowl of fresh water (topped up when necessary).

They'll let you know what they like (or don't like).
Mine have wet food with dry food available to graze on.

I also buy them red meat and tins of fish. They aren't spoilt though!
Our cat has pouches and cat biscuits to graze on.
Tony...what's your cats name?
Daisy.
Christened by my eldest daughter who had her as a kitten around 10 years ago. Daughter left home around 5 years ago though !.
Awww.....mine are Ivan and Stevie. Ivan licks Stevie's bum :-)
LOL

Daisy has a dirty flea bag of a Tom cat boyfriend that lives down the road, I call him Dave.
Lol...my son wanted to call Stevie 'Dave' until the vet told us she was a girl.

Sorry muchlovex.
Ah Stevie as in Stevie Nicks then, I thought it must have been a male.

She doesn't stop the girls going out, and occasionally they do - they all have access to a cat flap. It's simply that the boy likes to go out most of the time, and the girls like to stay in, but there are no rules.
