Police Dogs

If the Police have a dog that doesn't pass it's training, are they allowed to put it to sleep, and will they?

My father was a dog handler for Sussex police and if they had a dog that wasn't up to the task, they would usually rehome them. There's never a shortage of people who want a soft german shephard. But if the dog was too aggressive, they would considder destroying the dog as they would considder it unsuitable for rehoming

I had a mate who worked in the customs and excise. She is a dog lover and told me that they get emails round from time to time asking for homes for failed and retiring sniffer dogs and police dogs. She told me that If a dog has been attack trained and then retires or fails the course (not because too aggressive) then they will only rehome within quite a tight circle of people for safety reasons. Usually the handlers will take on retirees and often a failed non vicious dog, but if they can't find a home then they will put the animal to sleep. I understand that the same is true in the forces.
