Why do people now seem to have yapping dogs , not proper barking dogs of yesteryear? Sitting on the patio with a cup of tea and a fag listening to the birds singing, now the bloke down the road has finished his DIY with a hammer, and yet, for the past half hour some yapping mutt has been at it, are the owners not aware ?

Not aware of what? They have a dog? Yes I assume they'll know.

They buy these rats on leads and leave them outside YAPPING, if it was a child left outside screaming then I am sure someone would soon do something about it. If they want a pet then buy a rabbit, no noise, rant over.
I agree baza. We have one next door, only yaps when left alone, so the owners don't believe us.
My next door neighbours dog barks and cries when left alone. I haven't told them as they rarely leave it alone.
poor dogs. Continued barking is is sign of stress. Ummm, do your neighbours know that their dog barks when left? They may not, and if it was me, I would want to know because it means the dog is very unhappy.
I feel so blessed with my lurcher who never ever barks.
I haven't told them because like I said they rarely leave him and it's never for long.
not to complain ummmm but because the dog is unhappy and they may not know.
I don't want them to feel bad when they have to leave him.

whirly, a proper dog then. Not a rat on a lead.
To be fair baza, its lunch time (at time of your posting) on a Saturday, don't think you can complain about a noise at that time of day.

If you want peace and solitude, move where there's no other people.
baza.......I agree.

Not all dogs yapp, but those that do, whatever the time of day or night are an absolute nightmare. You can mention it to the owners, but they are not usually receptive of other peoples discomfort......like kids.
ummm, if they know there are simple things they can do to stop the dog being so unhappy.
Okay...next time he does it I'll tell them. The only other time I hear him bark is when he sees my cats :-) They just stare at him like he's stupid...
There are some people you just can't tell, my neighbour has a dog that yaps and cries when he goes out. I told him the dog wasn't happy and he didn't believe me, I then taped it and the neighbour said it didn't sound like his dog.
When I pointed out he hadn't heard it yap because it only did it when he went out, he said it wasn't his problem.
Baza...as the owner of a small dog, ( who most certainly barks and doesn't yap ) I would like to ask you a question , on his behalf....why do you do still smoke (!)
vulcan, I am so sorry you have a compete moron for a neighbour:-( But well done for trying.

Mikey I saw a beautiful dog sitting on the front seat in a car driven by a woman who was happily puffing away on a cigarette. Clouds of smoke, all windows closed. She must think dogs don't have lungs or she doesn't care.
ladybirder...perhaps we should have included dogs in the recent smoking-in-cars legislation !

A few weeks ago, my neighbour looked after Willy for a day and night, while I was away. The first thing I had to do when I collected him was to give him a good bath, as she is a chain-smoker !

mikey, if I gave up smoking I might turn into a moaning old git.
I can live with normal day to day noises but a dog yapping for over an hour and a half is extracting the urine.
I suppose it would be similar to the pleb head over the road from me drumming for goodness knows how long.
